Autonomic Neuropathy

Diabetapedia definition: Refers to the damage to the autonomic nerves, affecting involuntary body functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, perspiration and digestion. It is not a specific disease. This damage disrupts signals between the brain and portions of the autonomic nervous system, causing decreased or abnormal performance of one or more involuntary body functions. Specific manifestations of autonomic neuropathy in people with diabetes include gastroparesis, bladder dysfunction, sexual dysfunction, abnormalities of heart rate and hypoglycemic unawareness.
