New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Brenda Novak is the author of more than forty books and the mother of five children. Her youngest son, Thad, is living with type 1 diabetes, which has motivated Novak to become a diabetes advocate, running an annual online auction to raise money for diabetes research. She’s raised more than $2 million to date! Novak’s next book, Home To Whiskey Creek, is the latest installment in her small-town contemporary Whiskey Creek Series. Novak took time out from her busy schedule to dish on life, writing, and life with diabetes.
What is your state of mind today?
Invigorated, hopeful, grateful.
What three words would you use to describe who you are?
Determined, hard-working, peaceful.
Why is diabetes your passion?
More than 350 million people live with diabetes worldwide. That’s 350 million reasons to try and beat it – and one of them is my youngest son.
What inspires you to do what you do?
The necessity of solving a problem that affects so many people – and is getting out of control.
How do you get inspiration for your books?
By watching and listening to everything going on around me – in the news, in my family, in other people’s families, on TV, in music. It all becomes fodder for the mill.
What do you appreciate most in your friends?
Patience, loyalty, and kindness.
What would you pack for your favorite vacation?
My e-reader would be the first thing. Then my computer and iPhone®. If I can’t be reading, I’d want to be writing. And if I can’t be reading or writing, I’d want to check my email. LOL!
What’s in your refrigerator right now?
What is your favorite way to relieve stress?
Getting a massage.
What is your idea of happiness?
To live with a clear conscience, to know peace and love.
What do you most dislike?
What words do you try to live by?
“My life is my message.” – Gandhi
What is your greatest fear?
That I will have to watch my son suffer from the complications of diabetes.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My kids. I have always spent too much on them.
On what occasion do you lie?
To preserve feelings.
Do you have a favorite character from your books?
Definitely. Virgil from Inside. (Or Dylan from When Snow Falls.)
Who are your heroes in real life?
Anyone who sacrifices for the good of all.
What would you choose for your last meal?
Homemade salsa or watermelon.
