Diabetapedia definition: In patients with diabetes who are prescribed insulin, about 40-50 percent of the total daily insulin dose is to replace insulin overnight, when fasting and between meals. This is known as background or basal insulin replacement and is relatively constant from day to day. The remaining 50-60 percent of the total daily dose of insulin is for mealtime and for high blood sugar correction.
