The 2011 Sanofi US Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge

The “Next Generation” Challenge

2011 Page bannerIn its inaugural year, Data Design Diabetes challenged innovators to bring together the richness of open data sets with the values of human-centered design to develop “next generation” solutions that might improve the experience or outcome of the millions of Americans living with diabetes.  

Following an open call for submissions, an independent jury narrowed the field to five semifinalist teams who each received a $20,000 award and additional resources to refine their solutions, including participation in a month-long “virtual incubator,” where they received advice and mentorship from industry leaders on topics such as user experience, business modeling, product design and technology architecture.

The semifinalists then pitched their prototypes to the judges at Demo Day at AOL in New York City on September 15, 2011. The following week, online voting was open to the public, who were asked to choose their favorite concepts. Based on these results and the judges’ opinion, two finalists, Ginger.io and Chewable, each received $10,000 to conduct a community uptake exercise in Sacramento to test their concept within a community of real people living with diabetes.

On November 14, 2011, in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, DDD announced the Challenge winner: Ginger.io. The team received $100,000 and a one-month residency at the Rock Health incubator in San Francisco to further develop their application. (Several major media outlets profiled the team after their Challenge win, including Fast Company Co:Exist, Bloomberg Businessweek and Portfolio.com.)

At the conclusion of this phase, the jury awarded $100,000 and a one-month residency at the Rock Health incubator in San Francisco to the grand prize winner, Ginger.io, to further develop their application.

Chewable, social game highlighting impact of food choices. Chewable is a mobile gaming service that helps people with diabetes understand the best food choices and tracks their progress toward meeting healthy goals through food interactions.

2011 Challenge semifinalists

Great Races Community Projects, QR codes tracking people’s activities. Great Races Community Projects gets people moving through Amazing Race-style competitions to find QR codes planted in local venues.

HopeUnwounded, interactive website focused on foot injuries. HopeUnwounded is a website combining uploaded patient data (pictures, glucose and insulin levels) with analyses of anonymous hospital data to prevent, diagnose and treat diabetic foot injuries.

Wellfra.me, web app to identify diabetes risk factors. Wellfra.me is a platform that empowers people living with diabetes to make a meaningful change and reduce their risk of complications. Wellfra.me personalizes publicly available data and creates individualized challenges and rewards to put those living with diabetes back in control.
